Case study: Automotive & Industrial

Blue Oval City, Paint Shop

Ford is leading the electric revolution with an automotive manufacturing ecosystem called Blue Oval City in Stanton, Tennessee. This large-scale project included a new paint shop that required an expert HVAC design partner to provide a reliable and high-quality system complying with strict regulations. McShane was invited to join the project as the utility design partner. We collaborated with our long-time partner Walbridge, Dürr Group, a global leader in the planning and implementation of paint shops for the automotive industry.

CHALLENGE

Walbridge asked us to provide a pre-construction budget based on our years of expertise that would fit within the existing budget. We needed to use our mechanical design expertise and fold in concurrent process design development sequences to adapt to the needs of the project. Most importantly, we needed to lead the job from start to finish.

solution

Leveraging decades of experience within the automotive industry and our strong partnership with Walbridge, we were able to proactively anticipate challenges that might arise in the course of the project.
We met the design requirements with a configuration and components that provided maximum value to our customer without sacrificing the end product or the budget. We were able to provide the real-time cost impacts of specific choices, thanks to our cost matrix and detailed conceptual designs built in our integrated design platform.

process

We used Autodesk Revit to design 3D building information models, provide cost analysis throughout the project, and create a plan for just-in-time delivery of custom components to the job site. We use it at every stage of the project cycle to help us see the bigger picture of how everything will come together, and the impacts of specific choices on elements around it.

We also used:

  • Automated and custom fabrication through our integrated shop
  • Total station system and hanger layout
  • Material handling and delivery
  • Installation verification
  • Commissioning documents

results

Using our design expertise and a conservative approach, we were able to provide value to the project owner without compromising on system performance or quality. Thanks to our internal experts, strategies, and tools, we successfully converted our conceptual plans to a controlled system installation that used on-time construction to streamline the process.
